I have been remiss in my updating of all thing internet. My site, my blog; I feel ashamed. The reason, however is a good one. I have been busy in preproduction and casting for A BAG OF HAMMERS which will begin shooting in August. It has been an amazing process so far, and not to be boring, but I really love my team. The cast we are putting together is going to be a group of proper serious actors, all of whom I couldn’t be more excited about. I have been counting down the days toward shooting, story boarding, casting and casting and casting and working on a plan to get across the finish line. Anyway, I don’t know how much I will divulge as we go along, but watch this space for more.

Also in exciting news I signed up with ICM, my agents Todd and Nate are awesome and very funny and I’m quite happily situated there.

I’ll try and be better about updating.
And I’m like a junky when it comes to learning things and information. Especially information that is esoteric or non-essential for survival. I don’t know why. Raise your kids on University campuses and see what happens to them. Anyway, I thought I would briefly announce that in a few weeks here I will be endeavoring to pick up a new trade or hobby I suppose my be more accurate. I’m going to venture to Canada and train to build acoustic guitars under the guidance of master builder Sergei de Jonge. I couldn’t be more excited about this opportunity.

This study will be chronicled on line in some fashion, but I have as yet to decide how. You will be of course the first to know, assuming you read this before anyone else.
NEW POSITION PAPER
This is a flippant position paper that I started writing on a mad tangent and then the more I think about it, the more I think it would work, and perhaps save the country. A lot of people who have read the piece think that in order to enact such a change would take a civil war, but I think it would commence a civil peace. Our country is deadlocked and our current crop of politicians aren’t the answer. Obama keeps saying “Washington is broken,” and for the longest time I wondered what he meant. Now I think I get it. Hope you like it and join in on the revolution!

DIVIDED STATES by BRIAN CRANO
I don't know if I want to throw up or shit or take a cold shower. Maybe hit my head against the sharp edge of a table. I have, of course, been watching the Republican National Convention. Barack Obama was wrong in 2004, when he said there aren't red states and blue states. Wrong. There are. This isn't one country it's two. Both are fallible - sure and it could be argued there are virtues to each, but they are not two halves of a cogent whole. Rather, an ex husband and wife dividing their once collected belongings by throwing them at each other's heads with all their mite. I am obviously a partisan. I am obviously a liberal, or a radical liberal and I am proud of it. As proud as these backwards hateful mindless conservatives are within say 200 yards of a flag on the lawn of a wounded veteran. I get the same tingles they do next to an abortion clinic run by mixed raced gay doctors who ride public transportation. We both enjoy our foibles, that's where I want to begin.

And so my point is simple, sometimes you gotta pack your things and go. All relationships end. Just ask anyone I've ever loved if you don't believe me. I think America is over. The honeymoon certainly has been for a long time. The bridge to nowhere might as well be a bridge to this make believe middle fakey concept of United States. Not Barack nor John, no, I don't believe anything or anyone can unite us. Because there is nothing to unite. The divisions are too severe, too too black and white. For abortion, or against it. There is no half, there is no middle. For gay marriage or against it. Again where is the middle? Pro date night? More war, no war. Institutionalized God, secular civilized society.

Why are we trying so hard to make it work? Are we that prideful, can we not admit our mistakes? It's been bad for years and it's worse than ever. Why are we in it for the children? Fuck the children, they'll do fine, they'll be better when mommy and daddy aren't fighting all the time. It's time to dissolve the union. The Divided States of America sounds pretty exciting to me. They could call their part Reganlandia for all I care. That should appease them. They can keep the flag too. They could follow in their namesake's footsteps and deny the existence of AIDS. They're half way there, clearly some of the children of the Republican ticket are already having trouble with the proper application of a condom.

There is no shame in division, only in mindless continuance. Both our agendas suffer from the obstructions of the other and we end up down the end of an political cul-de-sac with no where to go. Like two drunken hags fighting over a trailer park heart throb, who's been two-timing us all along. The prize is not that great.

I'd rather jump head first into a dry pool than hear another discussion of teaching creationism in public schools. You want to? Fine! Do it, but do it in Reganlandia. You want school vouchers and to deregulate everything and no taxes and no programs and no laws more forward looking than were conceived by a disciple of Christ suffering sunstroke 2000 years ago, sustaining his mind eating 65 calories of desert cactus a day and playing his favorite drinking game with his buddies - Thou Shalt Not______ ; fair enough, let me draw you a map to the heart of Reganlandia, Billings Montana - your new capital. You want to start a war on abstract concepts: drugs, terror, jealousy, be my guest, but there is no ideological draft in which I will participate, your new country is in the middle, enjoy Texas, I hear its a great time of year to be bigot there. You want to burn the constitution, the bill or rights, fuck - the magna carta, I'll send you a barrel (made in the [former] USA). Reganlandia, home of the big lie and just crusade!

We, the elite, Arugula people, who pride ourselves on of all things (hold your nose Reganites) education (eeeeeeew, makes squirm), can call our new country The Bicoastal Land Masses of Civil Liberties, Pacifism and Personal Freedoms. Sure it doesn't roll off the tongue but you get the message. We get the west and the north east. They can have the middle (what some have called the shit stain on the panties of the country) and Hawaii (our little gift). We'll power our equality agenda with wind, our health care with solar, our schools with hydro-electricity and the only thing we'll drill for is warmth and good nature towards others. We'll be indignant about genocide and remember the value of political protest. Women will earn an equal wage, everyone will earn an equal everything. We'll socialize anything that's not nailed down. And high quality dental care will be provided for the homeless with the money we save on bombs (which as it turns out will be very easy to sell off to Reganlandia, they are sure the British are coming back one day or the cave people or the locusts). The arms sales will pave the way for revolutionary breakthroughs in medicine. By farming research fetuses we will be able to cure everything from cancer to bacne, providing, en route, high paying research jobs for the people of New Orleans (now relocated to Las Vegas - between where the Barbary Coast and Ballys used to be).

Now as much as I loathe them, they have some good ideas. For instance, I do want learn something from their border security platform. I say in the B.L.M.C.L.P.P.F. we need to have some really secure borders to make sure none of the Reganlandians can climb our fences (or for that matter put old whiskey bottles on them for their target practice. And we must be careful not to travail their soils again either. As you know, they are proud gun-loving hunters, I've heard as for the length of their season, liberals are game all year round.

There's no shame in divorce, especially when you stand to gain so much by doing it (countless millions, for instance). A war hero taught me that. And this may be the one instance when I'm inclined to follow that old raisin's example.

United we fall, divided we stand. I'm standing, who's standing with me?
This is easy to explain. When you travel around the world and go to festivals, the last thing you end up thinking about is taking pictures. Rather, you’re meeting new people, seeing their films, drinking to cope with all the bad films, making friends, etc. And if you don’t like having things in your pockets, a camera is clumsy! Any way I was better at Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films this year. It was a lot of fun this time around. Not as much I would say as Palm Springs ’07, which just had a more rowdy vibe. This year was a bit up tight in terms of the filmmakers, everybody was trying to sell something. Anyway I like this gallery making it’s kind of like scrap booking.

To see the new gallery click here or on the above link.

I am so happy as a large part of my interest in the film business came about because of a few visits I made to the Venice International Film Festival. And now I am so happy that RUBBERHEART has been invited to screen in official competition at CIRCUITO OFF, VENICE INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM FESTIVAL. The festival takes place in Venice, Italy, from August 30 - September 5th. This is a truly amazing opportunity to return to one of our four favorite places on earth. Also notable are the festival's statues which can be seen below, they are very handsome. For those of you sports fans keeping score, this is festival number 19 for RUBBERHEART.

The short film has picked up its second summer screening in Australia. This one comes at the 17th Annual Brisbane International Film Festival, or BIFF to intimates. As some of you may know, the RUBBERHEART family has a cadre of Australian filmmakers for friends who are all lovely and exceptionally talented. Leading us to predict, if these guys are representative of the norm, the quality of this festival is sure to be quite high, even if attendance puts at risk the health and happiness of your Liver.
We don’t have solid screening dates yet, but this we know the festival will take place in Brisbane between July 31 - August 10, 2008. And if you want to take a look at the festival’s (award winning) website, you can do so at
www.biff.com.au

RUBBERHEART has been invited to screen in its 14th festival - as part of the LATITUDE FESTIVAL 2008. It's kind of like the Cochella of England, except not just music. There is art and theatre and film to go along with some major music. I'm very excited to have the film screen in the UK again, my spiritual artistic home. For all kinds of info about the festival check out this link www.latitudefestival.com The festival takes place from July 17-20, 2008 in Suffolk.

Also appearing at the festival are: FRANZ FERDINAND, SIGUR ROS, INTERPOL, DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, ELBOW, THE MARS VOLTA, BLONDIE, BRITISH SEA POWER, MARTHA WAINWRIGHT, ROSS NOBLE, THE ROYAL COURT THEATRE, PLAINES PLOUGH, THE BUSH THEATRE, NATIONAL THEATRE, RSC, AND MANY OTHERS.

RUBBERHEART is one candidate for best short film that is not divisive. We will unify our base and the audience will come together around our message of change. And if elected to best short, would guarentee marriage rights for all: human/human, human/doll, doll/human, doll/doll. The 10th Annual Washington, D.C. The program looks really tremendous, and a lot of friends and like minded people will be coming to the RUBBERHEART screening, so I hope you can make a special appearance (you know who you are).

In other news, Mathieu Young and I have started working on an UNTITLED PAPARAZZI DOCUMENTARY, and while filming last night we were involved in a high speed car chase down Laurel Canyon that was like something you could have watched in The Fast and the Furious. Days after highly successful screenings in Oslo, RUBBERHEART has been invited to screen as part of the fifth annual LONDON SHORT FILM FESTIVAL, January 4th - 13th. The festival takes place right in the heart of London, screening films at the Curzon Soho Theatre, as well as at the Institute For Contemporary Arts.

RUBBERHEART has been programmed into a selection called FUCKED UP LOVE, which will screen 4 p.m. Saturday, January 5th, 2008 at the Institute For Contemporary Arts. We will be screening our fresh minted Pal Digi-Beta print of the film, which looks glorious and rich. Quyen Tran's brilliant cinematography looks so lush and alive on this print. Well worth a watch.

So please, tell your friends, tell your family, but most of all tell yourself to come down and join us. As it's London, there will be a huge party to follow, with many members of the cast and crew in attendance. No, not the dolls.

It's a unique place, Norway, unlike anywhere I have been. There is a directness of the people that is really unparalleled. The festival was fantastic. The number of quality films they present is unmatched anywhere in the states. While I was there I viewed the following films and just wanted to give them a quick shout out: Born Without, I'm Not There (Todd Haynes is my hero), Black White + Gray, My Blueberry Nights (embarrassing), Savage Grace (Redmayne was amazing), I Love Hip Hop in Morocco, the Short Film Program and of course Mister Lonely. Also the guys at the festival couldn't have been more helpful or nice to me and I really appreciate it. Thanks Tommy, Eirik, Hans and everyone there.

Oslo is a difficult city for a vegetarian, I had to eat meat or I literally would have gone bankrupt. Not to mention everything EVERYTHING, comes doused in buckets-full of mayonnaise. Its revolting, but everyone is very shiny. As for gay life in Oslo, I visited the two oldest most established gay bars in all of Norway, which were a real interesting slice of life in and of themselves. At these bars everyone drinks, from what I could tell, as much as their body will physically allow, and then thrash about dancing, with no sense of their own physical space, or more to the point, yours. I'm not condemning these places, these gays, I met some very nice ones, who showed me around all evening, but there cultural differences were apparent. The dancing more resembled demolition derby than your typical Abbey-style dry-humping. Oh and it was one gay-anthem-after-a-tired-nother, except in Norway when it's raining men, and you get absolutely soaking wet, it's not water, not sweat, it's mayo.

Anyway here is a picture I took by the water on the harbor of Oslo, it may be my favorite picture I have ever taken, Mathieu should be proud! PICTURE

Right off the top, this festival promises to be fantastic.

RUBBERHEART has been chosen to screen as the opening film for Harmony Korine's feature MISTER LONELY (starring Diego Luna, Samantha Morton, and Werner Herzog). I am thrilled to be screening with Mr. Korine's film, as KIDS really shaped my early life, I think I watched it for the first time when I was about 12 and it had a big impact.

RUBBERHEART will also screen in the International Shorts screenings. RUBBERHEART is one of only seven short films showing in the festival. In amazing company with Wes Anderson's HOTEL CHEVALIER, Erik Rosenlund's LOOKING GLASS, Elisa Miller's Cannes Golden Palm winner VER LLOVER, Laila El-Haddad/Saeed Taji Farouky's TUNNEL TRADE, Jean-Gabriel Periot's multiple award winner EVEN IF SHE HAD BEEN A CRIMINAL which has shown in over 160 festival (yikes that a lot of fees) and another of Jean-Gabriel Periot's films 200,000 PHANTOMS with music by Current 93, one of Antony's compatriots. So amazing company may very well be an understatement.

But wait, it gets better. Also the line up of features at the festival is pretty staggering. Including Brian's hero - role model - maker of the film Brian watched every day for two years - then one time embarrassingly showered with compliments at Bombay Cafe in Culver City -Todd Hayne's I'M NOT THERE, My good friend Eddie Redmayne's film SAVAGE GRACE in which he and Julianne Moore get a bit freaky I'm told, Sean Penn's INTO THE WILD, Wes Anderson's DARJEELING LIMITED, Jason Reitman's JUNO, and master Ang Lee's LUST, CAUTION.

I could not be more excited to be participating in this festival and being allowed the chance to explore Oslo and Norway beyond. Hope you can join us (yeah as if the fun couldn't get better, oh wait what's that, Rebecca is coming too - this is ludicrous) in Norway. And if not, keep checking this space, for all the updates.

For more information and the complete program, check out the festival's site at www.oslofilmfestival.com.

I am personally very excited about this. The festival is fast approaching, taking place from November 15 -25, in Oslo. Also this should be an especially fun festival as both Rebecca Hall and I will be on hand (in giant parkas) to participate together in the festival. For more information check out the festival's site which should be updated in a few days with the complete program at www.oslofilmfestival.com. We are thrilled to be making our European premier in Norway!

In other news, The screenings have been going exceptionally well, all over the world. At the Rio De Janiero International Short Film Festival, RUBBERHEART played to a packed house of hundreds of people at its first screening and is screening in tomorrow's specially selected festival marathon screening that closes the festival. And while screening at the New York City Short Film Festival the film picked up an audience choice award. Both festivals were a lot of fun. Soon I will post images from all the festival screenings on this site. Thank you so much for your support of RUBBERHEART.
